It's official, term's in! Our new year leader, Joao, had us read Ben Duval's essay Surfaces and Signs before term and this week we presented quick experiments exploring "surface". My experiment, the rug shown below, was a literal use of surface. I embroidered the words "LET'S TALK" on the underside of the rug and displayed it with the corner up to hint that something more might be underneath. Since I'm focusing on oppression and institutional racism, I wanted to visualize how I feel these issues are dealt with in modern society, which is to say, hardly at all. Definitely in American society, and I suspect in most Western cultures, the majority would rather not confront these topics and the complexity they embody, so we chose to avoid their existence. Sweeping the conversation under the metaphorical rug, as it were.
