Diana Arce's talk about her work was exactly what I needed today!
Diana’s recent work is closely aligned with what I hope to show through my own work. She pushes the boundaries, makes people uncomfortable -with a goal to open them up to bigger discussions- and distills complicated issues like race and politics through performance. After her talk, Gunjan and I discussed the presentation. We agreed that Diana’s work can be a really powerful way to engage a wider public on important social issues, and we worried that the purpose of these projects was simply to get a reaction. We concluded that the goal should be, and hopefully is with Diana, an informed reaction. One from which the audience can gain, at minimum, a greater appreciation for and employ critical thinking. I think that's my main focus at the moment, finding ways to evoke informed reactions that lead to critical awareness.
